Which milk is right for me?

Milk. Cow juice. The elixir o’ moo.
You love it. I love it. We all love it. Unless, of course, you’re a damn dirty lactose intolerant (I’ve had my say about you) but that’s quite besides the point.
I’m a whole milk kinda guy. I’ve had 2% and 1% and Skim (or is that the same as 2%? Oh, who knows) and it all tastes like water to me; cloudy cowy water. I can’t stand the stuff, though people have told me that once you get used to the taste it really isn’t all that bad.
Let’s add that to the list of acquired tastes I don’t want to acquire:
- coffee
- beer (though I do like some beers)
- porcupine
- Low fat milk
What is the discerning milk drinking heavy guy to do? Enter Over the Moon, available from the Lehigh Valley Dairy (that’s the local purveyor of milk in the Philly area. I am sure they have it in your area too, though probably from a different dairy farm). They claim that Over the Moon has the same fat content as 1% Milk (or 2%, there are two varieties available) but it retains the same rich, creamy taste that whole milk drinkers love. But wait, there’s more! Check this out, from the Over the Moon FAQ:
What other health benefits are there to drinking Over the Moon?
In addition to drinking a lower-fat milk without compromising on taste, you also get 16% more calcium and 25% more protein than regular milk. Adding these nutrients is how we get it to taste so good.
Less fat but more protein and calcium? If this crap tastes as good as they claim I think we might have a winner here. Sadly, one serving of Over the Moon is 130 calories (20 from fat) while whole milk has 150 calories (70 from fat). I can see that Over the Moon is better, but is it that much better?
Anyone try this stuff? I think I’m going to buy some on the way home from work tomorrow (yes, I’m walking). I’ll do a review here… perhaps it’ll even be a video review. That would be fun.

Milk products give me extreme skin problems. Add to that the fact that I’m veggie and blam you’ve got yourself an almost-vegan. If you haven’t tried soy milk lately, I recommend vanilla flavored Silk brand soy milk. Yum. What do you eat your milk with anyway? Cereal? Baked goods? You don’t drink coffee so that can’t be it…

I’ve never had Over the Moon, but I did enjoy ultra-Skim milk or something, that is supposed to taste more like 2%, but have nutritional content more like skim. I think I might have seen it at Whole Foods. I’m a happy skim drinker - I think whole milk is like drinking straight cream.

As we get older, we bite the bullet and go to skim milk (100% fat free). I remember drinking whole milk by the gallon, but now I can’t even handle it in my tea.
I add soymilk to my tea, and rice milk to my mashed potatoes.
If I need to have milk (eg., for cereals), it’s skim, but I don’t overdue it, because at this point my body has adjusted to living without it.
I get most of my dairy intake from yogurt, your stomach’s best friend.

The thought of drinking whole milk makes me want to barf. I’d try to acquire a taste for 2% and move down from there.

I have to say that I used to crave 2% and then got used to it and moved on to 1% and now am used to skim (which is 1/2%). I hate to be one of those people who overestimates things, but I truly consider myself a fat-aholic, and low-fat milk is something that starts tasting fattier the longer you drink it. Also, if you’re on a low-carb diet like South Beach, it starts taking on magical properties as a special treat, and seems even creamier and sugarier than it used to when it was just something you ate with cookies.
